Japan provides US$5 million for polio eradication in Pakistan

On January 12, 2024, Japan approved a grant agreement totaling JPY516 million (US$5 million) for Polio Eradication and Infection Expansion Prevention Plan, in collaboration with UNICEF.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are one of the few countries with endemic polio. Japan has continuously cooperated with UNICEF since 1996 to support polio eradication efforts in Pakistan. Containing the spread of polio and striving for its eradication is a critical priority for Japan.

The plan is intended to provide funding for the procurement of vaccines necessary for conducting polio vaccination campaigns targeting children under five years of age in Pakistan. The assistance is estimated to enable around 19 million children under the age of five to be vaccinated against polio. The effort contributes to the eradication of polio in Pakistan and aims to prevent the international viral spread and support global efforts towards polio eradication.
